A couple of Proverbs to remind myself. Do not get a big head.
Proverbs 27:2 “Let someone else praise you, and not your own mouth; an outsider, and not your own lips.”
Proverbs 27:21 “The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, and a man is tested by his praise.”
Psalm 119:71 “It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.”
The thing I learned is that my faith is genuine. God already knows that it is. The testing is for me. To show me and teach me.
1 Peter 1:6-7
“6Â In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.
7 These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.”
Among a lot of other things, one thing I need to learn is how to accept praise from others.
Two things come to mind.
- A British maxim I learned from The Art of Manliness, it states… “Do not complain, Do not explain”. I have employed this maxim and found it to be true. I have also found I have a penchant to explain things. I try not to but it is like trying to catch water going over the spill way.
- Cowboys. I like the way cowboys acknowledge folks in old westerns. When they are introduced or are leaving they don’t say anything they just grab the brim of their hat and nod their head just a bit.
I need to learn to be quiet, cordial and just say,
“Thank you ma’am”
and give God the glory.
