Sarcasm in all of it’s forms is by design, an instrument of pain.

1 : a sharp and often satirical or ironic utterance designed to cut or give pain. (mine: on purpose. No, you were not joking)
2 a : a mode of satirical wit depending for its effect on bitter, caustic, and often ironic language that is usually directed against an individual: the use or language of sarcasm.
Using sarcasm today, in my experience, is an attempt to use what intelligence you think you may have to elevate yourself above the person who is your intended target.
People tend to think they are comedians. They are not. Comedians spend countless hours honing their craft, testing what works, and what doesn’t, to come up with one good zinger that if done correctly…
looks effortless, quick witted or off the cuff.
People using sarcasm all of the time are none of those things. Then you toss on the stink of arrogance and you get, David Letterman, before his heart attack. Don’t believe me… just ask Cher.
We live with sarcasm everyday, maybe you’re aware of it, maybe not. I love a good comedian. I don’t have a favorite right now who is in the limelight. I do have past favorites though.
They all us irony and sarcasm, banter and jesting to varying degree’s depending on where their act wound up.
But all modern day comedy is based off of the misuse of sarcasm. Comedians are kinda smart, they think they’re smart, they have to show everyone just how smart they are by using the oldest form of sarcasm there is. Straight up sarcastic bullying.
It doesn’t matter who the intended target is or how the joke gets laid out, it will center on a person and the act of making that person feel small, singled out, less of a person, that is the intended result. That way the rest of the herd can turn and laugh at them, think it was funny and never once stop to think that through a little bit.
If you want to start a revolution and kill off all of the aristocats, go ahead. Start with some very sarcastic comic strips, work your way up to the ‘Letter to the Editor’ and when the Capitol is burning and you make the front page, then you can state,
“Didn’t I use my sarcasm well?”
Just… don’t be dumb.
