Scene:Â dad and son have been working all morning on the family business and it’s getting time for a stop
Scene: coming out of the literal wilderness into a small town to fuel up and grab something to eat, moving north as the sun comes up as planned,
dad and son are a bit tired but are having fun together
making it north at sun up they pull into filling station and procure the needed supplies. Some gasoline and a bag of chocolate doughnuts and a couple of cups of coffee… black.
Hopping back in the truck they make a few more runs after leaving town and later that morning they stop in at a little place for a bite of breakfast, another cup of coffee and some conversation.
as they order breakfast and settle in, the son looks around as dad pulls out some notes to go over while they talk and have breakfast
As the son looks around he begins with a seemingly innocent question.
Son: “Dad, why does it seem as if we step back in time when we come up here?”
Dad: “Looks the same to me since I’ve been in business.”
Son: “That’s what I mean, just look around at how old everything is.”
Dad: “Hey don’t be knocking old, you’ll get there someday.”
Son: “You know what I mean, you know I love old stuff.”
Dad: “Not lately. Seems lately you’ve had just about enough of old family traditions, the family business and the family in general the way you’ve been acting.”
Son: scene – the son turns and looks out the window, staring at nothing, just not wanting to look at his dad right now, he slips a finger through his coffee cup handle, (the same way his granddad did in an earlier scene), raises the cup slowly to his mouth, hesitates, and takes a long measured sip before speaking, he needs a second, he doesn’t know why, but if he hurries he feels he could crack and won’t be able to hold back all the emotion he suddenly has welling up inside of him, he feels the heat from his blush as his dads words hit his ears, his initial reaction is anger, but he knows his dad is right, he has been a royal pain in the neck lately and doesn’t even really know why, he loves his family, his dad more than he can explain and yet sometimes thinking he is the dumbest person alive and knowing full well he isn’t, he looks at his dad – as his dad is looking over the field notes. And he tries to truly see his dad for who he is, the son wonders if he even really knows who his dad is outside of his role of Mr. Kairos.
scene: the son starts to wonder about his dad, father – sure, business owner – yes, husband – lovingly, being a son himself and showing his dad all the respect and love in the world and so the son has a question.
Son: “Dad?”
Dad: “Yeah, son.”
Son: “Why did you change your name?
