My thought is this.
A story is not about the arrival.
A story is about the journey getting to the arrival.
For example, our family has a hunting cabin up North.
It’s a bit rustic and a great place to get away from it all.
But the stories we tell of the cabin never entail ‘the arrival at the cabin’.
We always talk about how the drive went getting there.
i.e.
- what time did you leave
- was traffic bad in Wausau
- did you stop in Merrill
- the long stretch on Hwy 8
- passing the sketchy fireworks ‘store’ that used to be an elementary school
- did you stop and top off in Phillips
- crossing the river
- seeing the Big Bear statue or a real bear on Hwy W
We never talk about the arrival, it’s just, “yep, took about 3 hr’s.”
