The helper was different and what the little girl didn’t know was that the new helper, even though she was young, was wise beyond her years. You see, the young helper came from a very large family who loved her and encouraged her. They encouraged her to share her day at the supper table in the evening and they encouraged her to be very smart, very beautiful, very friendly and to help other kids when ever she could.
You see when you are in a family you help each other as you grow up, you listen to each others stories about school, friends, things that scare you and the fun times and some times you all sit around and just laugh together.
So they worked together a little bit and got know one another but the little girl still wasn’t so sure about this “helper“.
The little girl would still test the helper, like when she didn’t want to do her work one day the little girl started to cry, because it worked before with the teacher. She was quite surprised when the helper got a funny little smile on her face and looked right at her and said, “don’t even try it, I invented crying to get my way”. WHOA!!! What was that, she didn’t get mad, she didn’t get frustrated. The little girl didn’t know what to do… so she did her work.
The next day she decided to try something else, she threw a fit and threw her pencil on the floor. “I’m not doing this!“, the little girl said. But the young helper surprised her again. Instead of getting angry she actually sat up in her chair, calmly crossed her arms and sat there quietly and just looked at the little girl. The little girl was kinda uncomfortable with this. This young helper didn’t act like anybody else. So the little girl said in a snotty voice, “What?” And the young helper just said, calmly, “I can wait.” Whoa! No yelling, no getting ordered around. The little girl again didn’t know what to do and class time was almost over. The little girl looked at the young helper and sighed “Fine then!” and picked up the pencil and finished her word assignment for the day.
Then something happened that the little girl could just not believe, she heard it and just could not believe it. As she was waiting to go to lunch she saw the teacher pull the young helper aside and talk to her. She was close enough to hear but the teacher and the helper did not see her. The teacher asked the young helper “How is reading class going?” “Really good”, said the young helper. The teacher leaned in close and said, “It’s ok, you can tell me the truth, I know how she can be.” The little girl saw the young helper pause for a moment and thought, “oh man here it comes, she’s gonna tell on me!”, but when she heard it she just could not believe it! The young helper looked at the teacher and said “ya know, she is really smart, we’ve been getting to know one another and I like helping her, she catches on really quick for a kid her age, I think she’ll be all caught up by the time we’re done.”
WHAT! No way! She just could not believe it. Those were the first nice words any one has said about her since… since she could remember. It made her day, it made her feel good. So the little girl thought to herself, “maybe, just maybe this young helper is for real.”
The next day in class the little girl was very polite, very friendly and very smart and she had a great time learning with her young helper. This was way better than “acting out” she decided. Things went on very nicely for a time and the little girl came to like and trust the young helper so much that she decided to tell her about her most favorite, very beautiful yellow dress that she never ever got dirty.
