One day when their work was all done and they had some time together the little girl just started talking. And being wise beyond her years the young helper started to brush the little girls hair and just listened.
The little girl started to tell the young helper about her most favorite, very beautiful yellow dress.
She said she got it from her grandma a year or so ago, about this time last summer. But just before school started her grandma had gotten really sick and did not come home from the hospital. She watched as her mom and dad cried a lot as neighbors and friends came and went for about a week. Then she had to stay with some friends for a whole day when her mom and dad got dressed up and she heard them arguing about going to church. After that day every body stopped coming over. The little girl was sad because her grandma did not get to see her wear her very beautiful yellow dress on the first day of school.
She described the dress her grandma bought her, it was so beautiful. It fit just right, had some fancy lace on the bottom, some ribbons that tied in the back and was such a color yellow, she never saw such a yellow, it was so beautiful!
The little girl went on to tell the young helper how her mom and dad seemed far away to her, they were there but they talked mean to one another and yelled at night and the little girl would be afraid listening to her dad stomping up and down the hallway.
She told the young helper how the very beautiful yellow dress made her feel. When she put it on she felt smart, she felt pretty and wanted to be friendly to everyone! The very beautiful yellow dress made her feel safe and secure, it gave her courage, it made her not afraid!
But she had to be careful with it because she didn’t get much help from her mom and dad and would get yelled at if she was to much trouble or got her things dirty. And she struggled with reading and she had a hard time understanding the wash tag instructions and the buttons on the washing machine and clothes dryer.
“Well,” said the young helper, “that sounds like the most beautiful yellow dress ever, I would love to see it some day.” Right then the first bell rang, ending class and the little girl did something she had never done before, she hopped up and gave the young helper a quick “Thank you”, and a quick hug. Just a quick one.
