My wife Trish and I have been married just over twenty five years as of this writing. Today we are preparing for Christmas 2016 and God is calling to my mind two memories I have of my wife that make me proud of her.
Did you ever watch the movie “My Cousin Vinny”?
The scene in the courtroom when Joe Pesci call’s Marisa Tomei as his witness. She is a hostile witness because she is also his fiance. The part I like the most about the scene is when the prosecutor is going to test her knowledge about automotive mechanics and he give’s her a B.S. question to answer and the judge (Herman Munster) ask’s her “Why is it a trick question?” “Vinny” slaps his nephew/client Ralph Macchio on the shoulder, “Watch this!” he says.
He gets a big smile on his face as she goes into great detail about the automotive question being asked and basically destroys the prosecutors objection of her as a credible witness. She finishes with “Four degree’s above top dead center.”
“Vinny” is so proud of her he kicks his feet up and crosses his arms because he knows she’s got this!
Well I think of my wife every time I watch that scene and think of these two instances where my wife Trish “got’s this!”
The first memory:
We are a baseball family, so our kids, all five of them, grew up playing ball and breaking windows. Kinda goes hand in hand. Trish was in the yard pitching to our oldest and I was the catcher.
Kyle, that’s the oldest, was around 8 or 9 maybe at the time. He could hit, so he could put a good swing on the ball already.
Well Trish pitched it in and Kyle hits a liner, a shot, on a rope, right back at her, hard! She didn’t have any time to do anything but catch the ball, a nice across the body back hander, SMACK! Right in the mitt! You shoulda seen the look on those kid’s faces, it was awesome. I was like “Oh yeah, your mom just did that!!” They looked at her a little different after that day.
The second memory:
Trish does not like confrontation. She has never been in a fight or anything like that. But don’t be mean to kid’s, any kid’s when she’s around. The story came home from school one day that “mom took on the kitchen nazi!” “What?” I asked. When Trish got home I got the whole scoop because I couldn’t believe what the kids were saying. There is a staff person at the school Trish works at, who takes her job a little to seriously in the kitchen as far as the lunch hour goes. This kitchen staff is known by my other kids as well and they said this staff is very particular when it comes to serving time and what color trays the kids can use.
Trish was walking by one day and there was a young girl just standing outside the cafeteria.Trish went up and asked her “Whats up?” The girl just looked up at the serving area and said she was to late to get lunch. When Trish looked, there was “the kitchen nazi”. When Trish asked why the young girl couldn’t get lunch, all that was said was,
“She’s too late.”So Trish, being Trish, Â proceeded to grab a tray and take the young lady through “hostile territory” and got her lunch. My kids were funny telling the story, they couldn’t believe that there mom would do such a thing and Trish just blew it off saying “She needed to eat, she was just a little girl.”
Talk about a proud husband.
My wife Trish is a great cook and can make me laugh at myself like no other and like today, makes Christmas a special time with our kid’s, even though they are mostly grown now.
But when I think of why I love her the only thing that comes to mind is the Word of God in Isaiah 43:4
“Because [she] is precious and honored in my sight..”
