There is a saying in all the success books out there that goes something like this, “Most people looking for success don’t plan to fail… they simply fail to plan.”
As I have been taking my steps in learning how to be a writer one of the things I felt early on was a need to be honest with you the reader.
I hope you have felt that I have been.
Also in chronicling my overall journey I’ve been able to talk to some people, give a talk or two (unpaid as of yet, but we’ll get there) and have received some good feed back.
One such comment came from a young man when I was invited to talk in his small writing class concerning how I was self publishing my books.
He asked, “How much did you make last week?”
I paused for a moment, like I was thinking, adding up all the numbers and came back with, “About $2.62… emphasis on the cents.”
He on the other hand wants to make a billion dollars like J.K. Rowling. Good luck to ya.
But his teacher did ask me what my plan was for sales and that gave me an opening to explain that writing my books is really just a very first step in my bigger picture.
I’d like to share what that is for two reasons…
1. To let you in on it and
2. I haven’t really written the whole thing down yet
because these first steps are a little, well a lot… learning as we go here.
On my journey to discover what success means to me I felt I needed a destination and a starting point.
Hence ‘The Emerging Man Chronicles’ concept.
I explained to the writing class that I wanted to have five books under my belt ‘before I did anything’, they would actually be my foundation for further endeavors and successful steps.
Two down, waiting on one and two to go.
Evaluate and learn the world of writing from some classics, currently reading Hemingway’s ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’ and recently learning about and reading a genre called ‘Flash Fiction’.
Also I am researching venues that pay for original content. I had a goal in January to submit two efforts to an online magazine, goal = met, I never heard back, so either they kept em’ or… they ended up in the interweb version of the ye ol’ round file.
I have also started to follow writers, publishers and others on social media to learn the environment.
I have learned a few things about myself also, I am a life learner, I am not so much a problem solver as I am a problem identifier, who pro-actively and with very methodical focus can implement a solution to aforementioned problem. It’s fun.
And I’m a doer.
The future for The Emerging Man… develop the overall brand concept first and fill in the rest later. Like…
- a youtube channel?
- more books, oh yeah!
- a plan to help men of all ages as they emerge from?????
Thanks for reading.
Oh yea, If you are waiting for some more Kairos family installments… they will be getting completed in the next couple of weeks… stay tuned!
